the criminal justice system can be complicated and hiring a lawyer can help

Many civil rights advocates have rallied for years that the criminal justice system is biased against people of color. However, very little systematic data existed to back up these claims. However, a study conducted by Stanford University recently found that police officers regularly use less respectful language with racial and ethnic minorities when compared with white community members. Anyone who has been accused of a crime would do well to consult with an experienced criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, the police may overstep their bounds and violate your rights, which could become an important component of your overall criminal defense. The research study in this case analyzed data from nearly 11,000 case records in the San Francisco public defender’s office between 2011 and 2014. They determined that white, black and Latino indigent defendants in San Francisco had significantly different experiences in the adjudication process.

The resolution time for a case involving a black defendant was 14% longer than the time to resolve a case involving a white defendant. Defendants of color often received sentences that were up to 28% longer than those received by white defendants and defendants of color were often convicted of more serious crimes than white defendants. No matter what type of situation in which you find yourself of being accused of a crime, it is imperative that you identify an attorney who is dedicated to fighting for your rights. There is a lot on the line when you are accused of any crime whether it is felony or a misdemeanor and the right lawyer can have a significant impact on not just your case, but your ability to move on and put this unfortunate incident behind you.

Being accused of a crime is always a serious matter and one that should prompt you to retain a knowledgeable lawyer right away. You need to be able to count on someone who understands the local procedures and laws so that you feel confident in your defense. Since the right lawyer can have a big impact on your case outcome, you can’t afford to wait to get the help you need.
